2025 Artist Residency in Riga, October

During the residency, Gisèle Gonon focused on expanding her research on the relations between agriculture and queer ecologies within the Latvian context. An intensive and productive period, offered the chance to connect with the local art scene, meet artists and institutions, and carry out field research in the countryside. Gonon traveled through the eastern part of Latvia, exploring the Vidzeme region near the border with Estonia, as well as the northwest of Zemgale and the Kurzeme region in the south near the Lithuanian border. These trips were organized with the support of members of the Latvian Permaculture Association. They had hoped to visit more queer collectives or community projects based in the countryside, though not all the messages sent received responses, a part of the challenge in building these connections.

Beyond fieldwork, Gonon took time to read, visit libraries, and explore Riga discovering exhibitions, art spaces, and the wider cultural landscape. Having a dedicated studio space offered the opportunity to reflect, write, and develop new directions for future projects. Overall, this residency was a concentrated and enriching period that helped them gain a deeper understanding of the local context, and to imagine potential future collaborations and creative projects.

2025 Artist Residency in Riga August/September

TUR Artist Residency in Riga

August – September 2025

Jan Dickey was TUR's artist in residence for August/September 2025.

For more information about Jan Dickey

In his work, Jan Dickey explores the natural tendencies of paint - its flow, layering, cracking, and peeling - using earth-based materials like egg, casein, oils, and animal glues. By sourcing and preparing his own pigments from materials such as cochineal, black walnut, and turmeric, he embraces unpredictability, allowing compositions to evolve spontaneously.

During his residency, Jan drew inspiration from his Latvian heritage, particularly its deep connection to natural materials and traditional craft. His residency at TUR served as a bridge between his personal history and artistic practice, exploring the intersections of Latvian textile traditions, natural dyeing techniques, and his own approach to painting.

Dickey holds an MFA from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa and a BFA from the University of Delaware. He has participated in residencies across the U.S. and internationally, including the Sam and Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts and ARTnSHELTER in Tokyo. His work has been exhibited widely, with solo shows in the U.S. and Japan, and has been featured in publications such as Two Coats of Paint, ArteFuse, and Art Spiel.
